1. Headlands Beach State Park

The longest natural beach in the state is found in Mentor at Headlands Beach State Park. You can search for beach glass, go swimming, or simply sunbathe and read a great book on the shores of Lake Erie.

Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the many tables throughout the park or grab a cold drink and snack from the concession stand, open at Headlands Beach during the summer months. You might even catch a glimpse of a monarch butterfly, red fox, or bald eagle.  Headlands Beach State Park is open from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. It’s located at 9601 Headlands Road in Mentor.

2. Civic Center Waterpark

This city facility lets Mentor residents cool off on the hottest summer days. Civic Center Waterpark features a heated outdoor swimming pool, an inflatable obstacle course, splash climbing walls, a spray park, and lap lanes.

Additional amenities at the waterpark include a bathhouse with changing rooms, shaded picnic tables, and wireless internet. Civic Center Waterpark is open every day from June 6 through August 14. Daily admission is $10 per person or Mentor residents can buy season passes at a discounted rate. The park is located at 8500 Munson Road in Mentor.

3. Mentors Lagoon Nature Preserve

This 450-acre site offers ample opportunities for hiking, boating, birdwatching, and more. Mentors Lagoon is a wetland, forest, and river marsh landscape designated by the state as an Important Bird Area with more than 250 different species.

You can also rent a kayak to paddle Mentors Lagoon. The preserve is located at 8365 Harbor Drive in Mentor. It’s open from dawn to dusk every day. 

4. Atlas Cinemas Great Lakes 16

If the weather is too hot to handle, enjoy a blockbuster and some popcorn in the ice-cold air conditioning at the local Mentor multiplex. Atlas Cinemas has a 50-foot digital screen and luxurious reclining seats. You can even rent out an ​entire screening room for a private party.

Although Atlas is a large theater, it’s an independent business that’s locally owned and operated, so you can see a film while supporting a family within the community. It’s located in the Great Lakes Mall at 7860 Mentor Avenue.
