Most Dependable Non-Luxury Brand - J.D. Power VDS

Kia K5

Now in its 32nd year, the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners of three-year-old vehicles in 8 major vehicle categories. It’s one of the most commonly referenced studies that measures both dependability and reliability of new vehicles.

In dominating fashion, Kia earned the title of Most Dependable Non-Luxury Brand in the 2021 J.D. Power VDS with a score of 97 PP100. No other non-luxury brand was able to outperform Kia when it comes to dependability.

“Earning the top spot among mass-market brands in J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study is another new benchmark achievement for Kia’s meteoric rise in the industry,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America. “This substantial award bolsters our track record in initial quality and shows that the ‘new car luster’ of our world-class vehicles extends far beyond the first 90 days of ownership. Kia owners continue to enjoy and feel confident in their vehicles as the years go by, especially knowing they’re backed by our industry-leading warranty.”

J.D. Power IQS

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), now in its 34th year, examines problems experienced by owners of new 2020 model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. In a truly historic victory, Kia is the highest-ranked mass-market brand for an astounding 6th consecutive year.

“Returning to number one in the industry and the top of J.D. Power’s U.S. Initial Quality Study among all mass-market brands for the sixth consecutive year is an enormous honor and a reminder to keep striving to be the best we can be,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America. “With 4 segment winners – and 4 additional models ranking among the top three in their respective segments – Kia’s ‘Give It Everything’ brand philosophy continues to bear fruit in the extremely competitive automotive market.”

RepairPal Reliability Rating

RepairPal Reliability Rating

The team at RepairPal uses a variety of factors to determine their overall reliability ratings. Simply put, the more reliable your vehicle, the lower your out-of-pocket ownership costs will be. These factors include the cost of repairs, frequency of repairs, and severity of repairs. Collectively, these categories are averages in order to determine an individual brand’s overall RepairPal reliability rating.

Kia earned a top 3 position in the RepairPal reliability ratings, including a top 2 finish when including only non-luxury brands. The Kia Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 3rd out of 32 for all car brands. This rating is based on an average across 345 unique models.

“Kia had 3 popular models in the top 30 with Excellent ratings, including the Soul, Rio, and Forte. Its two most popular models, the Optima and Sorento, also retained Excellent ratings in the top 100.”
